When TV Shows Reference Other TV Shows

You know you're a TV geek when...

...it warms your little TV-obsessed heart every time one TV show references another. I'm not just talking about simply mentioning another TV show. I'm talking about when there's a much deeper meaning behind that reference. More of a non-comedic callback, if you will.

Two of my favorite examples from the current TV season:

Exhibit A: The Crazy Ones

In a recent episode of The Crazy Ones, Sarah Michelle Gellar describes how she and the new guy she's seeing, Josh, spent the weekend together binge-watching Bones.

(I'll spell it out for those non-Buffy fans out there: David Boreanaz stars on Bones! You know, the same David Boreanaz who played Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer!)

Subtle reference, right? Well, later in the episode SMG drives it home even more during her (spoiler alert!) breakup conversation with Josh:

"Just tell me one thing. Was any of it real? Was Bones just a lie? Do you even like David Boreanaz?"

As any Buffy fan can attest, just SMG mentioning David Boreanaz is enough for us to jump for joy. And to do it as a reference folded into a TV show just for TV geeks to recognize? Well that is pure bliss.

Exhibit B: Hawaii Five-O

Jorge Garcia recently guest-starred on an episode of Hawaii Five-0, which stars another Lost alum, Daniel Dae Kim. (Oh, and if that's not enough, Terry O'Quinn -- aka John Locke -- also just happens to have a recurring role on Five-O.)

It makes me happy just to have the Lost gang back together again on a show, even for one episode. But Five-O took the little Hurley/Jin reunion one step further. When the two reunite on the crime drama, this little exchange takes place between them, Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) and Danno (Scott Caan):

Steve: So how do you guys know each other?
Jerry (played by Garcia): High school.
Danno: Oh, let me guess. Starting quarterback and starting center?
Jerry: More like starting trumpet player and starting French horn. Old Valley Band Camp. 1985.
Steve: Band camp?
Jerry: Yeah. Remember how tiny those tents were?
Chin (played by Kim): Dude, how could I forget? It was like we were stuck on a deserted island all summer.

Get it? Deserted island? JOKES!!

For those of you who like it any time TV shows play nice, here's a TV reference mashup courtesy of the website Pleated Jeans. Enjoy:
