Someone please tell me that today is April Fools' Day. Because I just heard that CBS is considering a How I Met Your Mother spin-off, tentatively titled How I Met Your Father. It's gotta be a really cruel joke, right?
Earlier this week I wrote about my hatred for TV reboots. I guess I should have included my hatred for utterly unnecessary TV spin-offs as well.
I'm not against spin-offs. I'm looking forward to the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul. The Facts of Life was a great show. I watched Melrose Place. I loved Daria (a spin-off of a spin-off). Heck, The Simpsons is a spin-off.
There's a difference, however, between a spin-off and a total rip-off (even if it's by the same creators), a complete redo of a show that already existed.
The concept of How I Met Your Father is that it follows a new group of friends, and this time it's a woman telling her kids the story of how she... wait for it... met their father. (Bet you didn't see that one coming!) And to top it all off, McLaren's Pub may be featured too.
You guys. I love How I Met Your Mother. I watch it every week. Co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas were right to end the show this season. They told the story they wanted to tell. So why resurrect it?
Here's one thing I will say. This spin-off probably isn't really against the official Bro Code, but I think once Barney hears about it, he'll add it in.
Would you watch How I Met Your Father?
